Wooten comes The Music Lesson, the story of a struggling young musician who wanted music to be his life, and who wanted his life to be great. Then, from nowhere it seemed, a teacher arrived. I will state first that my spiritual beliefs are liberal, so I am not giving this book a poor review because it goes against any “dogma” I may have. I agreed with everyone’s review who mentioned how great a bass player Victor is.

So why one star? Because this is rehashed, 101, 1960 new age type philosophy (I hate to use the term as this is so elemental a book on music and spiritually). What we need is a complex discussion of the two, and there are examples do a google or Amazon search, of books, thesis and Research studies in the fields of Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, and even in books which discuss practicing an instrument.

I brought this book without really looking at it, since I assumethat Victor’s writing would be as interesting and informative as his playing. Wrong.

My recommendation: Read someone else on this topic.

I bought this for my bass-playing boyfriend and not only did it arrive well before the stated delivery date but the book itself is so much more than he expected. I’ve never seen him so absorbed by anything that wasn’t his bass before. I’m sure I wont see him until it’s finished… but he’s treatening to read it again once he’s done :)

Victor takes you on an amazing journey learning music from the spiritual side with himself and all of his “imaginary?” friends. It’s a must for music theory without the theory. Easy fast reading. Made me start thinking and playing differently immediately. It’s surely worth your time.

Anyone who criticizes this book because of Victors complete failure to explain how he became one of the world most accomplished bass players is absolutely right, but I think they’re ignoring the point he’s trying to make. Victors whimsical semi-fiction stories about the different music lessons that he stumbled upon for a diverse group of teachers are calling readers to action, demanding that they start opening their minds and ears in order to really understand music. He never makes the claim that his abilities came purely from these chance meetings, and anyone who has seen Vic live or heard his recordings knows that he’s spent countless hours mastering technique- it’s implied and typical, so he doesn’t address it. There’s no magical formula to speeding up scales and arpeggios, it just takes practice, so rather than write about his practice habits, Victor rights about how motivational teachers took his spiritual growth to new levels, allowing him to get in touch with higher music. His book focuses on the core ideas behind musical creation that so many musicians forget about in the quest for perfect technique, and is therefore a perfect read for anyone trying to fully realize every step of the path to mastery. Nobody can argue with Victor’s skill, so it’s definitely worth the time to see what he has to say about his patch to musical and personal growth.
